Nature's Doilies~

My final Screen Printing project.

Yes, your eyes do not deceive you; this book, is My art!

I know its sooooo different then anything I've ever done... in my LIFE!

So with this last project I wanted to GO crazy, unoriginal but still me.

I decided to make a book.

This book is somewhat of an ode to the lost art of Doily making.

I had received these most beautiful handmade tatted doilies

that were created by my Great x3 Grandma.

I wanted to incorporate those awesome lil' bits of art into my art.

Yes, I created a book of SPIDERS!

I know I know... I'm crazzzzzzy.

I thought what's something soooooo gross,

horrifying, and pretty much, the most horrific thing imaginable?

Hellllo, that's spiders!!

I wanted to take something that I'm so scared of,

but appreciate the beauty within them.

Spiders are so gross

but yet create one of the most beautiful arts in nature...

I found these cute old vintage books at the D.I

and wanted to use them as my covers for my book.

(I thought of making my own covers but

there's no way I could of created

that old warn look that I was going for.

So I guess you can say this project

is a found object/ screen print piece)

I exposed all my great grandmas handmade doilies to my screen

and drew the many spiders (and fly);

to create these cute subtle colorful pages to my book.

( I made two copies of this book)

At The Kayo Gallery ...

"The artists in this month’s exhibit at the Kayo Gallery present us with some of the most common ingredients of life, all deconstructed by space, approach or gaze.

-Brian Patterson, a multi-media artist native to Salt Lake City, presents a portion of his University of Utah honors thesis, “Born Witness.” The installation examines the idolatry of suburbia, erasing the lines between the objects that children play with and the objects the mature adorn their homes with by looking at what they share in common— sex, war, the untamed beast, and the adoration of the infant. The work presents a hypothetical answer to the question,“What might we believe if we threw all of our idols together?” and what it might look like if we were to romanticize it. The installation, comprised of hundreds of found objects, wood, and approximately 125 gallons of house paint, is an exciting culmination of Patterson’s work over the past few years.

-RISD-educated Utah native Wren Ross has, of late, been interested in a kind of “seeing.” Reading a medical anthropology study on cataract operations performed at the turn of the 20th century, Ross adopts the approach of the newly sighted person, with a pure visual perception of the world unadulterated by knowledge: “seeing without knowing.” She uses the resulting, new visual language to present her viewers with a lexicon of narrative without necessarily directing the viewer to a consequence. Inspired by the “very small, the very plain and the very overlooked: bones, smooth stones, the sound of dry grass knocking in the wind, small birds in big tangles, paperclips on the sidewalk, brown butter and kale of all kinds,”—Ross’ works delight and inspire close examination of both the work and the ideas behind it.

-Raised on a farm in rural Missouri, Sandy resident and figurative artist Stephanie Toland captures the emotions and feelings connected with two aspects of being a woman in the early- to mid- Twentieth century: beauty rituals and motherhood. Symbolic references abound in her realistic paintings; wallpaper alludes to ideas of continuity, objects represent a mother’s thoughts. A narrative of commonality runs through both series presented in this show—common cultural expectations, common hopes and frustrations, common ideals and stereotypes. These windows into the most mundane, yet intrinsic, parts of a woman’s life show both the vulnerability and strength of their subjects."

This is a painting/commissioned piece I did for my cousin for my Uncles Christmas present. It's a painting of my uncle Scott on my grandpas lap. This painting was really fun because I had to bring my creativity and my colors skills out...this is originally a black and white photo, so I pretty much had to create my own color pallet. I wanted to do an old time photo feel...where the color is muted as if it was an old black and white photo that had color painted on it (like the old time photos). ENJOY!

Self portrait~
My teacher insisted on me painting myself in this series. I was sooo dreading it. I had never painted myself before so it was kinda scary. But it ended up being one of my funniest paintings ever. It was fun making my lips more plump along with a few other things ;) It was nice...I found myself hardly using the photo & mirror I had of myself...I guess I know my face better then I thought!

This is my final piece to my Beauty series, and I am happy with this series and the outcome. I am excited to show it to everyone in my show in January (@ the Kayo Gallery).

Also thank you everyone for the wonderful, confidence boosting comments/complaments on my art...you are all the BEST! Thank you!

Here is the lovely Hazel putting on some jewelry to make herself feel pretty. I reallllly wish I had a nice camera because these pictures really don't do this painting justice with the colors and lighting. Her skin was an absolute treat to paint...it was deee-vine! I added some real tulle to her hat and it turned out lovely! Enjoy!

I also am excited to incorporate mixed medias; in my CoreyJoe painting I added real lace into it; and for this one I stitched some thread to make cute red flowers and leaves...I really wanted to add bits of colors throughout the back ground to bring the eyes all around the painting!

To the viewer the pregnant woman is beautiful. Most people; when they see a pregnant woman they think it is a beautiful thing (unless they are wearing a belly shirt with her tramp stamp hanging out).  But most (and I am not talking about you Stac..b/c you are the only person who felt beautiful), women don't feel beautiful.  They are sick, have aches and pains, mood swings, they feel like a fat pig, etc... so everything in the room is representing the way she physically feels inside. bleh!
